Hermes supports all satellites/sensors in the market

Our platform builds upon our deep knowledge and knowhow acquired after 12+ years collaborating with the main players in the space sector (e.g. ESA, THALES, DEIMOS). We have already developed a strong set of core libraries that allow for multi-satellite mission modelling, sensor geometry modelling, constraint planning, interactive 3D visualization and data streaming optimisation.

Price and customers’ Return of Investment

We offer equivalent services in terms of quality and accuracy as those offered by our competitors at (at least) 50% the cost but, more importantly, being our results ready 5 times early has a direct impact on the number of images our customers need, which makes them spend ~4 times less in their images consumption, accelerating dramatically the RoI on HERMES.

Improves productivity and promotes technological advance of the space industry in several ways

Speed matters, as not obtaining the data at the right time imposes a bigger consumption of data, increasing needed investment. Due to HERMES exceptional boost in processing speed (10x-100x upgrade), satellite data acquisition planning and processing is strongly optimized, which is important for such an expensive resource (around 75% of the total cost for a GIS project, as we will see later), but critical in applications such as early disaster warning systems, where response time is measured in human lives.

Development cost reduction

As we plan to license our software as a Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) product, inhouse software developments carried out by satellite data users will be reduced, and our core software, the hardest to develop, test and maintain (responsible for ~ 50% of developing efforts as we will see later) embeds our 12+ years’ experience in the space sector, will become a solid software module upon which our customers can reliably build their specific solutions, even if they had no prior experience in this sector.

Dissemination of pioneering technology

GPGPU parallel processing (see GPGPU advantages in technical annexes) is a complete novelty in the space industry. We, a 100% European SME are in a position to lead the world market of such solutions for the space sector, a market dominated until HERMES by US companies. Moreover, the know-how we have developed is difficult to acquire as it also requires a profound knowledge of the mathematical and subjacent physical models of the devices and systems involved, so dominating both worlds (parallel processing and space physical models) is a rare combination of know-hows that will become a huge advantage for potential followers.

Overall Objective

Through the innovation points presented before we want to push technological development of the space industry and its satellite segment, offering our more than a decade long know-how in GPU programming applied to its specific needs. With HERMES we plan to consolidate our technology model and later build it up with new functionalities and techniques destined to attend the growing needs of the space and satellite data services industry. We have already a solid presence in several agencies and companies with other products, and we expect to expand through our current distribution network and reputation.

Business Opportunity

HERMES aims to incorporate into the space and satellite industries the latest technological innovations available in the hardware and software industries, in particular the use of GPUs to process visualization, simulation and similar data commonly used in space applications. Our technology is based on careful optimization of data analysis according to its type, which determines if it will be best processed either by the CPU or the GPU. It is important noticing that not all data is suitable for GPU processing: as shown by the processing speeds in Fig. 1.1.C, as the more multithreaded the data, the more advantageous is GPU processing over traditional CPU processing. This knowledge applied to satellite data is the expertise acquired by TAITUS over the last 12+ years, and the main value proposition of HERMES.

Relation to the work programme

HERMES is designed as an innovative tool to improve the current state-of-the-art at world level in the software market for the space industry, a critical area that concentrates much of the economic and engineering efforts made today by all spacefaring agencies and countries. As such, it is completely aligned with the topic SMEInst-04-2016-2017: Engaging SMEs in space research and development and its objectives, as it will be the software tool with best technology/price ratio available in the market, thus helping enhance profitability and growth of SMEs and other institutions that currently cannot access the space sector due to its heavy financial prerogatives. All of them belong to our target market, allowing a fast uptake sustained by the spreading of a new software standard that will significantly reduce the resources necessary to carry out projects in the space sector. By lowering the initial needed investments, we favour that a higher number of private companies can enter the space sector. Indeed, HERMES is specifically well suited to engage SMEs in space research and development, especially those that traditionally run from using space data because they cannot accurately estimate the cost of the satellite data they consume. Moreover, thanks to HERMES they will be able to optimise their costs. Furthermore, HERMES is extremely useful in pre-planning missions: it makes easy understanding satellite nuances thanks to our fast and comprehensive visualisations. This will strongly help them to make good use of space data in their business.
